The SS City of Paris was on its way back from India with cargo and 13 passengers en route to Marseilles. On 4 April 1917 after receiving several coded messages that enemy submarines were in the area she was torpedoed by U35 off Cap d'Antibes. The submarine surfaced called for the Captain, who could not be found. She then opened fire on the ship before sinking it with a second torpedo. Only life boats with the dead were found and a total of 122 died.
