HT Osmanieh

On Monday 31 December 1917 the troopship Osmanieh was carrying troops and medical staff to Alexandria when she struck a mine laid by a U-boat in the entrance to the harbour. She sank with heavy loss of life. Among those lost were eight nurses including Nurse Nellie Hawley. Two other Lewisham residents, lance bombardier Walter Brett and airman 3rd class Bertie Hugh Wolfe, were also lost on the Osmanieh.
