Private 271173 DOUGLAS ERNEST WILLIAMS of 5th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment died on 30 December 1917. He enlisted on 3 May 1915 in the City of London Rifles and was then transferred to the 5/Bedfordshires. He was 16 years old.

He was one of a draft of replacements for the 5th battalion traveling with about 2,700 other troops from Marseilles to Alexandria on the troopship SS Aragon. The Aragon was torpedoed about 10 miles offshore as she waited her turn to enter harbour. Twenty five of the Bedfordshires were lost from the total of 610 casualties.

He was lost at sea and is Chatby Memorial, Alexandria.

He is remembered on the memorial at the church of St James, Hatcham.

He was the son of Mrs. K. Williams, of 10A, Ruddigore Rd., New Cross.
