Second Lieutenant JOHN DAVENPORT WILES of the 1st Battalion the Suffolk Regiment died on 4 October 1916, aged 34. His appointment to the 3rd Suffolks as a 2nd Lieutenant was announced in the London Gazette of 11 June 1915.

In the Salonika campaign the areas occupied by the Allies were plagued by mosquito-borne malaria and more men died of illness than from battle injuries.

He is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.

He is also remembered on the war memorial at St Bartholomew’s church, Sydenham.

He was the son of William David Wiles, of "Hillside," Sydenham Hill Rd., Sydenham.
