Whiting, James George Edmund Patrick DCM


War Service:
Sergeant James George Edmund Patrick Whiting DCM [service number 46567] served with the Royal Field Artillery. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1915, whilst serving as a Bombardier in the 8th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. The award was published in the London Gazette of 23rd June 1915: For conspicuous gallantry in repairing telephone wires under heavy fire.

Location of Memorial:
He was commemorated on the memorial at Holy Cross Catholic Church, which has mostly been destroyed.

He was the only son of J G Whiting builder and decorator, 35 Brookdale Road, Catford. He was educated at St Winifred's Roman Catholic School, Lee. He first worked as a telegraph boy at Perry Hill Post Office before enlisting at New Cross on 19th April 1907 into the Royal Field Artillery.
