War Service:
Able Seaman P/J 45558 EDWARD C VINEY died on 24 October 1943. At the time of his death he was serving on the destroyer HMS Limbourne.
On the night of 22/23 October HMS Limbourne was part of a force of Royal Navy destroyers led by the cruiser HMS Charybdis which intercepted the German blockade runner Munsterland. The British vessels were attacked by the Munsterland’s escort of torpedo boats and Charybdis was sunk. Limbourne's bows were blown off and she was so badly damaged that after the survivors had been taken off she was torpedoed by one of the other destroyers.
Location of Memorial:
He is buried in Hither Green cemetery where his name is recorded on a CWGC Headstone.
