Private CHARLES JOHN THORNDYKE of 1st battalion Hampshire Regiment died on 1 July 1916, aged 27. The Battalion War Diary for the first day of the Battle of the Somme reads “Our casualties in officers amounted to 100% and was also heavy in other ranks”. The reality was that the battalion had lost all 26 officers and 559 men.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme

He is remembered on the memorial in St. Luke’s church, Evelyn Street, Deptford.

He was the son of Charles John Thorndyke, of 2, Croft Street, Deptford.
