Rifleman 301115 WILLIAM HERBERT JOSEPH THATCHER of ‘A’ Company, 1st/5th Battalion London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) died on 27 August 1917, aged 19.

He is buried in Ghent city cemetery .

Ghent was occupied by the Allies early in October 1914 but evacuated on the 11th. It remained in German hands until reoccupied by the Belgians on 10 November 1918. The cemetery contains 86 graves of prisoners of war buried there during the German occupation, among them William Thatcher.

He is remembered on the memorial at Brockley School.

Details:
He was the son of William John and Gertrude Emmeline Thatcher, of 77, Wellmeadow Road, Hither Green.
