Southard, Robert Charles

War Service: Robert Charles Southard served as a Private with the 3rd Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) and his service number was G/19991. He died on 22nd December 1916 aged 23.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: Robert Charles Southard was the son of Robert and Mary Southard and he was born in Deptford in 1893. He had six brothers; John Edward, Alfred William, Thomas Henry, Albert, Frederic and Sidney, and a sister, Louisa.

On the 1911 census he was recorded living at 18 Berthon Street, Deptford with his family and he was employed as a labourer.

He married Ellen Louisa Pearce on 14th November 1915 at St Johns Church, Deptford. They had one son, Robert, born shortly after his father died. Ellen appears to have remarried becoming, Ellen Cowie, and she lived in Ipswich.
