HAROLD FREDERICK SMITH died on 27 May 1917 while serving as First Engineer on the SS Ancona. He was 31. The Ancona was torpedoed by the German submarine UC70 110 miles SW of Ushant en route from Falmouth to Lisbon and Spanish ports with general cargo. There were no survivors.
He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Merchant Navy Memorial on Tower Hill.

He was born in New Cross, the son of Fred and Jessica Smith. He was the husband of Daisy Smith of "Ronda", 8 Chinbrook Road, Grove Park.
