Lance Corporal G/953 CHARLES HENRY SMITH of 1st battalion Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) was killed in action on 30 July 1916, aged 19.
On the night of 29/30 July 1/RWK came under heavy artillery fire and incurred more than 60 casualties while in support in the village of Longueval.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme

He is also remembered on the Sydenham South Suburban Gas Works war memorial.

He was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, of 11, Miall Road, Lower Sydenham.
