Pilot Officer (Observer) KENNETH JAMES EDWARD SMETHURST Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve died on 4 February 1942, aged 20 while serving with 21 Squadron. His Bristol Blenheim was hit by flak while on an anti-shipping strike from Luqa in Malta, attacking convoys supplying the German forces in North Africa.

The aircraft crashed near Palermo. All three of the crew are buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily.

He is remembered on the memorial at Christ Church, Forest Hill.

Details:
He was the son of Herbert and Elsie Josephine Smethurst, of Lancing, Sussex.
