Rifleman 471626 Edward I Shepherd of the 12th (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (The Rangers) was killed on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
The Rangers took part in the attack on Gommecourt and by the end of the day their losses amounted to 17 officers and 498 other ranks killed, wounded or missing.
He is buried in Gommecourt British Cemetery No.2.

He is remembered on the war memorial at St Mildred’s church, Lee.
