Stoker 2nd Class JAMES JOHN RUTHERWOOD died on 30 June 1915 when the destroyer HMS Lightning sank off the mouth of the Thames, probably after hitting a mine.
He was lost at seas and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the memorial at the church of St. Luke, Evelyn Street, Deptford.
