Russell, William Alfred

Dates: 1895-1914

War Service: William Alfred Russell (also known as Alfred William) served as a Private with 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and his service number was 10323. He died of his wounds on 16th November 1914, aged 19, at Number 7 Station Hospital, Boulogne

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: William was born on 25th May 1895 to Alfred and Elizabeth Annie Russell and he was baptised on 16th June 1895 at All Saints Church Walworth. At this time the family were living at 38 Surrey Square.

In 1901 he was recorded living at 36 Amelia Street, Deptford with his family including his widowed grandfather, Arthur J Russell. In 1911 he was recorded living at 6 Reginald St, Deptford with his parents and his brothers Edward Alfred and Alfred George. According to the 1911 census he was employed as a milk carrier.

He enlisted in the army on 24th October 1913, leaving his employment as a labourer in a brewery.
