Sub-Lieutenant (A) HERBERT WALTER RAY Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve was killed in an air crash on 20 July 1943 while serving with 77 Squadron. He was attached to HMS Jackdaw at Crail on the Firth of Forth. Also killed in the crash was Leading Photographer George Strachan.
He is buried in Hither Green cemetery where he is remembered on a gravestone.

He is also remembered on the memorial at St John’s Presbyterian Church, Forest Hill.
Details:
He was the son of Herbert Harriett Ray of Honor Oak Park. He was known as ‘Chips’.
