Petty Officer WILLIAM JOHN PRESCOTT died on 27 April 1916 when the battleship HMS Russell was mined off the Maltese coast while maneuvering to enter Grand Harbour, Valetta with loss of over 100 lives.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial and on the war

He is remembered on the memorial at St Peter’s church, Brockley.

He was 36, the husband of Emily Alice Prescott, of 61, Honley Rd., Catford.
