Second Lieutenant CHARLES SWAN POWELL of 6th battalion, Leicestershire Regiment died on 14 July 1916, aged 29. He joined the London University OTC shortly after the outbreak of war and was commissioned into the Leicesters in Nov 1914. He went to France in the spring of 1915.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme

He is also remembered on the memorial at Haberdashers' Aske's school in New Cross.

Details:
He was the elder son of Charles and Harriet Powell of 219 Peckham Rye. His father was an examiner at HM Patent Office. He was educated at Haberdashers' Aske's and University College and achieved distinction at both sport and studies. He was awarded his BA when only 19. He was a solicitor and a member of the firm of Williams and Powell. He married Ruth Lund of Purley in May 1915.
