War Service: William Potter enlisted on 2nd February 1915 and served on the Western Front as a Lance Corporal with the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. His service number was F/587. He died on 8th August 1916.
Location of Memorial: He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and on the war memorial at the church of St Luke's, Deptford.
Details: Born in 1885, William Potter was the son of William and Kate Florence Potter of 239 Grove Street, Deptford. He had six brothers; Samuel, Arthur, Ernest, Walter, Joseph and Thomas, of which two were also serving in the army. He also had two sisters Kate and Gladys. Before enlisting in the army William was employed as a stevedore.
