Squadron Leader SIDNEY LESLIE PORTASS Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve was commissioned as a Flight Lieutenant in the Meteorological Branch on 14 November 1939.
He died on 22 June 1941, aged 26, when the SS Arakara on charter to the Admiralty from the Booker Line as a weather ship was torpedoed in mid Atlantic. A number of RAFVR meteorologists were on board.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede

Details:
He was the son of John William and Henrietta Blanche Portass, of Romford, Essex. He obtained a B.A. at Cambridge.
