Pitts, Robert John

Dates: 1890-1918

War Service: Robert John Pitts served as a Gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery and his service number was 47921. He died on 28th December 1918, aged 27.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: Robert John Pitts was born in Bermondsey between June and September 1890 to Robert John and Hannah Pitts.

He enlisted on 19th October 1914 and his occupation was a carman. He gave his next of kin was given as his mother Hannah of 14 Hanover Buildings,Tooley Street. This was later amended to 47 Cranbrook Road, Deptford. He was described as being 5ft 7 ½ inches tall and weighing 146lbs with brown eyes, brown hair and a fresh complexion. He had a scar on his upper arm. His character was said to be good.

He was discharged on 31st May 1916 due to being no longer physically fit for active service. He had tubercle of the left lung.

He married Ester Wren between April and June 1917. They had a daughter Agnes.
