Private 232525 SYDNEY JOHN PESTELL of 2nd battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) died of wounds on 6 November 1917, aged 21.

He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery near Poperinghe. There were three Casualty Clearing Stations in this area and the troops nicknamed them Bandaghem, Mendinghem and Dozinghem.

He is remembered on the memorial at the church of St James, Hatcham.

He was the son of Robert George and Maria Pestell, of 101, Woodpecker Road, New Cross.
