Pembroke, Joseph James

War Service: Joseph James Pembroke served as a Private in the East Surrey Regiment and his service number was 32686. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1918 and is buried in Ypres Town Cemetery.

Details: Joseph James Pembroke was born on 11th February 1892 and baptised on 25th April 1892. In the 1911 census he is recording as living at 53 Watson Street, Deptford SE with his parents Henry and Mary and two of his brothers. He was one of eleven children but four of his siblings had died by 1911.

On 23rd April 1916 he married Janett Warner at St Paul's, Deptford. Although he signed the marriage register originally with the name Joseph, he was actually married under the name Jonas.

His brother John Pembroke was killed also killed while on active service during the First World War.
