Pain, Henry Albert

Dates: c.1879-1918

War Service: Henry Albert Pain was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery and his service number was 51539. He died on 9th July 1918, aged 37.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: Henry Albert Pain was born c.1897 to Henry Arthur and Elizabeth Pain. In 1891 he was recorded living at 38 Queen Street, Deptford with his parents and his sisters, Rose and Elizabeth.

He married Maud Fielding on 25th December 1897 and at this time he was employed as a carman. They had three children who survived; Arthur (born 20th June 1905), Esther Elizabeth (born 2nd December 1907) and Catherine Rosina Ellen (born 10th August 1915).

He enlisted in the army on 14th November 1914 and was living at 14 Dacca Road, Deptford. He has previously served with the West Kent regiment. At the time of enlistment he was 5ft 6 ¾ inches tall and weighed 138 lbs. He had a mole on the back of his left upper arm, he also had a tattoo on his left forearm. He had hazel eyes and light brown hair and had a fair complexion. He was discharged on 15th January 1915 due to tubercle of the lung.

At the time of his death his wife Maud Pain, lived at 15 Berthon Street, Deptford.
