Gunner 1138978 EDWARD ARTHUR OVENS of 139 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery died on 6 February 1944.

He is buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma (now Myanmar). It was begun in 1951 for the reception of graves from four battlefield cemeteries at Akyab, Mandalay, Meiktila and Sahmaw which were difficult to access and could not be maintained. The cemetery now contains 6,374 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.

He is remembered on the memorial to the 91 and 139 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery in St Swithun’s church, Hither Green.

He was 21 years old, the son of Edward and May Ovens of Great Bookham, Surrey.
