Second Corporal 65244 ALEXANDER JOHN MITCHELL of 105 Field Company, Royal Engineers was killed in action on 20 July 1917, aged 34. Second corporal was a rank only found in the Royal Engineers and Army Service Corps. A second corporal wore a single stripe like a lance corporal but unlike the latter his was a full non-commissioned rank and not just an appointment. The rank was abolished in 1920.

He is buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery near Ypres,

He was the husband of Florence Emma Mitchell, of 32, Lutwyche Rd., Catford.
