Lewis, Richard George

Dates: 1895-1918

War Service: Richard George Lewis served as a gunner in the 69th Brigade Royal Field Artillery and later transferred to (436532) 621st Coy Labour Corps. His service number was 3688. Gunner Lewis died on 2nd November 1918 at Town House Hospital, Torquay and he is buried at Brockley Cemetery.

Location of Memorial:He is buried in Brockley cemetery where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: Richard George Lewis was born in 1895 and was the son of William G Lewis, a stonemason, and Emma Lewis. His father died in 1896 aged 37 when Richard was just a year old.

In 1901 the census records that Richard was living with his mother and step father at 172 Evelyn Street, Deptford. He had two brothers, Matthew and Walter, and a sister, Matilda.

In 1911 he was living at 269 Evelyn Street, Deptford with his mother Emma and step father Robert Tyler. He was employed as a shop boy at an ironmongers.
