THOMAS KNIGHT served as a Metropolitan Police Officer at Camberwell. As a naval reservist, on the outbreak of war he was recalled to duty as a Leading Stoker [Service No. 307737]. He died at the Battle of Coronel on 1 November 1914 while serving on HMS Good Hope (RFR/PO/B/3041).
On 1 November 1914 the West Indies squadron under Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock gave battle to a superior German force under Vice Admiral von Spee at Coronel off the coast of Chile. There was a high proportion of Naval reservists among the crews of the squadron. The cruisers HMS Monmouth and HMS Good Hope were lost with all hands.
Among the reservists lost on HMS Good Hope were eight Metropolitan police officers.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
