War Service:
An apprentice in the Mercantile Marine on board the S.S."City of Paris" (Glasgow). The SS City of Paris was on its way back from India with cargo and 13 passengers en route to Marseilles. On 4 April 1917 after receiving several coded messages that enemy submarines were in the area she was torpedoed by U35 off Cap d'Antibes. The submarine surfaced called for the Captain, who could not be found. She then opened fire on the ship before sinking it with a second torpedo. Only life boats with the dead were found and a total of 122 died.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill, which commemorates men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars and who have no known grave.

Details:
He was born at Blackheath in 1899 and died 7 April 1917 aged 18 and was the son of David and Annie Jones, of 7, Aislibie Road, Lee, Kent.
