Johnson, Herbert William

War Service: Herbert William Johnson served as an Acting Bombardier with the Royal Field Artillery. His service number was L/32178. He died 20 December 1915 at Barnshott aged 35.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: Herbert William Johnson was born 7th July 1880 and baptised 11th May 1881 at All Saints, Rotherhithe. His parents were Thomas and Eliza and they were living at 402 Southwark Park Road. His father was employed as a carman.

He married Susannah Saunders on 25th December 1901 at St Katharine's, Rotherhithe. He was living at 61 Dilwood Street and he was employed as a labourer.

In 1911 he was recorded living at 35 Sharratt Street, Canterbury Road, Deptford with his wife Susannah and children Albert John and Elizabeth. His step sister Martha Balcombe was also living with them. He was employed as a gas works yardman with the railway.
