Able Seaman P/JX 385383 PETER DREW HOWARD died on 28 May 1944, aged 18.

On 28th May 1944 the Free French destroyer FS La Combattante was on patrol protecting landing craft practising for the D-Day invasion. The previous night she had been in action with several German E-boats. She picked up an unidentified contact on her radar, opened fire with her main armament and obtained several hits. Tragically the target was later found to be Motor Torpedo Boat 732 which sank with 16 of ship’s company killed or missing and 15 wounded. Among the missing was Peter Howard.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

He is also remembered on the memorial at Holy Trinity Church, Sydenham.

He was the son of Benjamin Alfred and Mabel Howard, of Sydenham.
