Hirst, William

Dates: 1898-1918

War Service: William Hirst served as a Rifleman with the 11th Battalion London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles). He was discharged on 22nd June 1917 as no longer fit for active service and died of enteric condition on 9th April 1918, aged 20.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: William Hirst was born on 30th January 1898 to William and Elizabeth Hirst. He was baptised on 16th February 1898 at St Paul's Church, Deptford.

In 1911 he was recorded living at 37 Abinger Road with his parents, his four brothers John, Harry, George and Leonard, and his two sisters, Annie and Mary.

He enlisted on 4th October 1916 and gave his occupation as carman. He was 5ft 8 inches tall.
