Hillock, William

Dates: 1895-1918

War Service: William Hillock served as a Private with the 3rd Battalion Middlesex Regiment and his service number was G/7408. He died on 21st December 1918 aged 21.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: William Hillock was born on 3rd October 1895 John and Jane Hillock. He was baptised on 23rd October 1895 at St Paul's, Deptford and the family were living at 16 William Street.

In 1911 he was recorded living at 19 Staunton Street, Deptford with his parents, his brothers James, Edward, Frederick and Albert and his sisters Mary Ann, Maud and Millicent.

He enlisted in the army on 15th January 1915 and his civilian occupation was given as a porter. He was described as 5ft 8 ½ inches tall and had a small scar on his lip. He was discharged on medical grounds on 25 January 1916. He had been wounded, including a gunshot wound to his left arm and in May 1915 he developed epilepsy. His character was said to be very good.
