Hickman, John

Dates: 1891-1918

War Service: John Hickman served as a Private with the Army Service Corps and his service number was R/367302. He was discharged from the army on 12th December 1917 as he was not medically fit for service. He died on 22nd August 1918, aged 25.

Location of Memorial: He is buried in Brockley cemetery, where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Details: John Hickman was born on 8th March 1891 to Richard and Sarah Ann Hickman. He was baptised together with his brother Franklin on 27th September 1896 at St Johns Church, Deptford. He attended Lucas Street School, Lewisham.

His father died in 1908 aged 58 and his mother in 1910 aged 55. In 1911 he was recorded living at 39 Deloraine Street, Deptford with his brother Franklin and his sisters Phyllis and Emma. He was employed as fitters mate.

He had served with the military before the outbreak of the First World War and was discharged on 30th December 1914 before re-enlisting on 29th September 1917. At the time of his enlistment he resided at 41 Strickland Street, Deptford and he was employed as a dock labourer. He was described as being 5ft 8inches tall. His next of kin was given as his sister, Emma Cottle of 62 Connington Road, Lewisham.
