Helm, George

Dates:

War Service:
Private 10629 GEORGE HELM died on 29 January 1917 while serving with The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). George Helm served under the alias J Turner. In view of his age (he would have been 42 in 1914) it is possible that the false identity may have been assumed to help disguise the fact that he was over age for active service.

He is buried in Brockley cemetery where his name is recorded on the screen wall listing those whose graves have no headstone.

Location of Memorial:
He is also remembered on the memorial at the church of St. Luke, Evelyn Street, Deptford.

Details:
He was 45. He married Charlotte Bond in the autumn of 1907 and they lived in Rolt Street, Deptford. After his death she married George Crowther.

In 1881 he was recorded living at 37 Canal Row, Deptford with his parents William and Elizabeth. He had four brothers Robert, William, John and Thomas and three sisters Rebecca, Elizabeth and Jane.
