Able Seaman P/JX 203941 IAN NEWNHAM HAWLEY was reported missing presumed killed on 15 August 1942 while serving on the battleship HMS Ramillies.
On 30 May 1942 Ramillies was hit by a torpedo from a Japanese midget submarine off the coast of Madagascar causing extensive internal damage. She was repaired and made seaworthy at Durban in South Africa and on 13 August she sailed for Devonport for refit.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
