War Service:
Private 3085 GEORGE HARRIS of the 3rd Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Force died on 3 August 1916.

He enlisted on 9 August 1915 in Holdsworthy, New South Wales and gave his occupation as railway engine cleaner. He was posted to Tel el Kebir in Egypt where he joined his battalion on 14 February 1916. On 22 March 1916 the battalion sailed from Alexandria on the troopship Grampian bound for Marseilles.

On 25 July 1916 he was wounded in action at Pozieres, suffering gun shot wounds to his left thigh and was admitted to hospital at Etaples. He was sent back to England sailing on the hospital ship Dieppe from Calais. He was admitted to the County of London War Hospital in Epsom, where he died of his wounds on 3 August.

Location of Memorial:
He is buried in Hither Green Cemetery and remembered on the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and on St Mildred’s church War Memorial, Lee.

He was born in Lee in 1890, the son of Mr and Mrs George Harris of 61A Ronver Road.
