Private G/11049 ERNEST JAMES GHENT of 11th battalion Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) died on 1 August 1917.
On the night of the 1/2nd August the battalion was relieved from the positions they had held since a failed attack the previous day. In the course of the withdrawal the battalion suffered over 40 casualties and 41 Other Ranks were reported ‘Missing’.
Among them was Private Ghent who has no known grave but who is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.

He is also remembered on the war memorial at the church of St Catharine, Hatcham.
