War Service: Thomas Charles Gerrish served as a sergeant with the 9th Battalion East Surrey Regiment. His service number was 8303. He died on 16th August 1916 and is commemorated on Pier and Face 6 B and 6 C at Thiepval memorial.
Location of Memorial: Sergeant Gerrish is remembered on the war memorial at the church of St Paul's, Deptford.
Details: Thomas Charles Gerrish was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Gerrish, of 45 Adolphus Street, Deptford, London.
In 1911 he was living with his family at 31 Douglas Street Deptford and he was employed as an errand boy. He had four brothers Joseph, Charles, Albert and Robert and two sisters Elizabeth and Rose.
He enlisted 7 September 1914 and gave his occupation as baker’s labourer.
His brother Joseph William Gerrish was also killed during the First World War.
