Gerrish, Joseph William

War Service: Joseph William Gerrish served as a Private with 1st/20th Battalion London Regiment. His service number was 2588. He died whilst on active service on 1st October 1916 and is commemorated on Addenda Panel, Pier and Face 4 C at the Thiepval memorial.

Location of Memorial: Private Gerrish is remembered on the war memorial in the church of St Paul's, Deptford and on the 20th London Regiment Roll of Honour.

Details:
Born on 9th January 1897, Joseph William Gerrish was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Gerrish, of 45 Adolphus Street, Deptford, London. He was baptised on 28th January 1897 at Christ Church East Greenwich.

In 1911 he was living with his family at 31 Douglas Street Deptford and he was employed as an errand boy. He had four brothers Thomas, Charles, Albert and Robert and two sisters Elizabeth and Rose.

His brother Thomas Charles Gerrish was also killed during the First World War.
