Elder, William Gardner


War Service:
Lieutenant WILLIAM GARDNER ELDER of the 2/20th (County of London) (Blackheath and Woolwich) Battalion London Regiment died on 10 February 1918, aged 28. He spent a period as a staff officer and was later temporarily promoted to captain while commanding a company.

He is buried in the churchyard of St John the Baptist church, Eltham.

Location of Memorial:
He is remembered on the war memorial at Blackheath Congregational Church and also on the 20th London Regiment Roll of Honour.

He was the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Elder of 36, Greenholm Rd., Eltham. He was born in Erith and attended Christ's Hospital School, Horsham, Sussex from 1902 to 1906. He worked in the Faculty of Science at Kings College where he is commemorated in the chapel.
