Painter 2nd Class ARTHUR WILLIAM DOWLEY died on 9 July 1917 while serving on HMS Vanguard. He was 24.
At about 11.20pm Vanguard was destroyed by a series of explosions while at anchor in Scapa Flow in the Orkneys, killing all but two of the 845 members of her crew who were aboard at the time. It is believed that the explosions began in one of the mid-ship magazines.
He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

He is remembered on the war memorial at St Hida’s church, Brockley.
