Gunner 779 JOHN MICHAEL COAKLEY of 4th London Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died on 23 October 1915. On 23 October the troopship ‘Marquette’ carrying 600 troops and a New Zealand Field Hospital from Alexandria to Salonika was torpedoed and sank with the loss of more than 160 lives.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Mikra Memorial in Greece.

He is also remembered on the memorial to 91 and 139 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery in St Swithun’s Church, Hither Green.
