Corporal Edmund Hubert Tennant Service No:1290 of the 16th Bn. Middlesex Regiment. He was killed in action 10th January 1916, near La Bassee. He enlisted with his brother in January 1915 and served with the British Expeditionary Force in November.
The Captain of the brothers wrote:
It is very sad and their loss is regretted by the whole company. They were the life of the platoon and I shall never replace them.
Location of Memorial:
He is buried in a single grave with his brother Philip Lawrence at Cambrin Military Cemetery. Grave Reference: E. 13. He is remembered locally on the Grove Park, St Augustine WW1 War Memorial and Burnt Ash Congregational Church WW1 War Memorial.
Details:
He was born 25th February 1887 in Forest Hill. He was the 2nd son of Edward Allen Catchpole and his mother Fanny (Nee Barrow) was already dead in 1916 of Ravensdeane, Grove Park. He was educated at Cranleigh School and Westgate College and was an actor before the war. His brother Philip Lawrence died on the same day in the same Regiment, by the same shell. He changed his name by Deed Poll to Tennant and served in the First World War Under this surname, as did his brother Philip Lawrence.
