War Service:
Lieutenant Newdigate Owen BURNE of 40th Pathans British Indian Army was killed in action on 27 October 1917.

He is buried in Dar es Salaam war cemetery, Tanzania. Dar es Salaam war cemetery was created in 1968 when the 660 First World War graves at Dar es Salaam (Ocean Road) Cemetery had to be moved to facilitate the construction of a new road. During the early 1970s, a further 1,000 graves were brought into this site from cemeteries all over Tanzania, where maintenance could no longer be assured.

Location of Memorial:
He is remembered on the memorial at St Augustine’s Church, Grove Park.

Details:
He was 19 years old, the son of Brig. Gen. R. O. Burne, C.B.E., and Mrs. S. M. Burne, of 77, Biddulph Mansions, Elgin Avenue, Maida Hill. He was educated at Rottingdean School and Uppingham.
