Able Seaman J/9672 FREDERICK HUGH BURCHELL died on Sunday 1 November 1914 while serving on HMS Good Hope. On 1 November the West Indies Squadron under Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock gave battle to a superior German force under Vice Admiral von Spee at Coronel off the coast of Chile. The cruisers HMS Monmouth and HMS Good Hope were lost with all hands.
He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

He is remembered in the Book of Remembrance in the church of St Saviour, Forest Hill.

He was 20, the son of Hugh and Elizabeth Burchell, of 23, Vestres Rd Forest Hill.
