Stoker 1st Class HENRY PERCY BUDGE was killed in action on 1 June 1916 while serving on the destroyer HMS Nessus.

At about 2am on 1 June, during the final stages of the Battle of Jutland, the ships of the 12th destroyer flotilla made a night torpedo attack on the German High Seas Fleet. Nessus was hit by a 5.9” shell from the dreadnought Grosser Kurfurst which brought down her foremast and destroyed the galley killing seven men and wounding eight more.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial

He is remembered on the war memorial in the church of St Mary the Virgin, Lewisham.

He was 41 years old. He was the husband Alice Louisa Budge, of 3, Morden Villas, Hither Green Lane, Lewisham.
