Lance Bombardier 374614 WALTER GEORGE BRETT of Sussex Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died on 31 December 1917. On Monday 31 December 1917 the troopship Osmanieh was carrying troops and medical staff to Alexandria when she struck a mine laid by a U-boat in the entrance to the harbour. She sank with heavy loss of life. Two other Lewisham residents, Nurse Nellie Hawley and airman 3rd class Bertie Hugh Wolfe were also lost on the Osmanieh.

He is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial at Alexandria to those who have no grave but the sea.

He is remembered on the the war memorial in St Bartholomew’s church, Sydenham.

Details:
He was born in 1897 in Upper Sydenham.
