Sergeant 59053 ERNEST STEPHEN BRERETON MiD of X18th Trench Mortar Battery Royal Field Artillery died of wounds on 3 July 1916.

His Mention in Despatches (the generic citation is “for gallant and distinguished service in the field” ) was announced in the London Gazette of 16 February 1915.

He is buried in La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie on the Somme.

Location of Memorial:
He is remembered on the roll of honour of St Mark’s church, Clarendon Rise The church tower was destroyed during WW2 and the rest of the building demolished in 1980 and the roll is now displayed in St Stephen’s church.

Details:
He was 25 years old, the son of Mr and Mrs H. Brereton, of 13, Rhyme Rd., Lewisham. His brother Frank died on 10 June 1918 while serving with the Royal Engineers.
