Alfred Bowden, an electrician with the Southern Railway was awarded the British Empire Medal in September 1941.

The citation reads " Mr. Bowden displayed courage and initiative when a wharf was bombed during an air raid. He extinguished many incendiary
bombs and then climbed on to the roof of a warehouse and prevented a fire from spreading to valuable plant.
The neighbouring premises were burning furiously, making a target for bombs, several of which were dropped into the fire. "
